Mohamed André Duranteau, a renowned dancer, choreographer, and musician from Guinea, West Africa, founded Wontanara Drum & Dance in 2007 to share the vibrant cultures, rhythms, and dances of his homeland. With a career that began at age 15, Mohamed honed his craft as a dancer, singer, and percussionist with local troupes, including the prestigious Ballet Tayeli, where he was lead dancer for over twelve years. Since bringing his talents to Canada, Wontanara has performed in hundreds of shows and workshops across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
Now based in Halifax, NS, Wontanara specializes in West African percussion and dance, offering educational programs that foster cultural diversity and community connection. Named after the Susu word for "unity," Wontanara’s mission is to inspire and educate through the dynamic presentation of Guinea’s rich cultural traditions, promoting artistic expression and cultural awareness in audiences of all ages.
